Ecclesiastes
Description
"Everything is meaningless" doesn't exactly sound like the beginning of a book intended to be encouraging and uplifting. But it's fitting for a book that plumbs the depths of the human experience. It's fitting for a world full of chaos, where endless pleasures entice but never quite deliver. It may even seem like a perfectly reasonable response when death claims a loved one, when wars rage on, or when the veil of depression just won't lift. But with two simple words—"fear God"—the book of Ecclesiastes turns worldly wisdom on its head. Wealth, status, pleasure—all pointless in the end. But knowing God? Nothing in the world could be more meaningful.
